Job Summary

Coordinates and manages the operational functions of those issues involved in staffing and scheduling of patient care personnel for the inpatient areas. Monitors the organizational, operational and administrative standards to promote an efficient and effective level of staffing for optimal patient care. In addition, oversees the documentation of all births at Lexington Medical Center.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent
Minimum Years of Experience: 2 Years of experience in a supervisory and/or administrative capacity
Substitutable Education & Experience: None.
Required Certifications/Licensure: None.
Required Training: Proficiency in using personal computers for word processing and spread sheet analysis

Essential Functions

  • Coordinates and maintains processes to insure optimal levels of staffing are met and maintained in the patient care areas.
    • Participates in the formulation and implementation of the philosophy, goals and objectives of patient care areas.
    • Maintains the required staffing levels in the patient care areas.
    • Coordinates operational activities with hospital departments and external agencies/organizations as appropriate.
    • Demonstrates competence in critical thinking and problem solving to assist staff in providing services for the following patient populations:  Infant (Birth to 1 year); Child (1 year through 12 years); Adolescent (13 years through 17 years); Adult (18 years to 65 years); Geriatric (Over 65 years)
  • Will embody those behaviors, philosophies and values which serve to uphold the ideals and enhance the image of Lexington Medical Center.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Will assess human resource needs and plan and evaluate employee activities to ensure safe, effective and fiscally sound operations consistent with organizational and professional standards.
    • Manages the human resources in the area of responsibility in a manner which ensures safe and efficient operations.
    • Produce monthly working schedule based on a current skeleton schedule for review by the Nurse Manager and assist in providing any coverage for any recognized needs.
    • Review and audits the Time and Attendance for the various inpatient units.
    • Provides regular feedback to the Nurse Manager or Director for input towards employees performance evaluation.
    • Demonstrates ability to work with personnel in a manner which fosters positive employee development and performance.
    • Assist with interpretation and clarification of hospital policies and performance expectations.
  • Coordinates the utilization of material resources with appropriate consideration for patient/staff needs, hospital policies and procedures and budgetary constraints.
    • Evaluates and monitors the utilization of appropriate resources, based on the analysis of department needs.
    • Maintains accurate records of budgeted positions with a periodic review of acuity data. Data will be reviewed with the Nurse Manager and Director with interpretation and analysis.
    • Assist with the formulation and submission of an annual expense budget to include determination of optimal staffing levels.
    • Collaborates with the Nurse Manager and Director of Nursing to design systems, organizational structures and staff patterns that promote efficient and effective department operations.
  • Will communicate effectively throughout the health care system.
    • Keeps patient care team members informed of unit activities through oral and written communication.
    • Maintains required records and reports.
    • Collaborates with the patient care team members to enhance effective problem solving.
    • Facilitates and maintains good working relations with outside agencies.
    • Enhances the public image of Lexington Medical Center by participating in activities that reflect operational goals, plans and programs.
  • Identifies opportunities to improve patient care, health care practice and interaction with health care partners; and initiates and/or participates in development of action plans to achieve desired outcomes.
    • Participates in Performance Improvement activities, such as study, design and benchmarking. Will be instrumental in collection and analysis of data for problem solving and critical thinking. 
    • Identifies ineffective routines, interventions, and systems which do not contribute to desired or identifiable outcomes and takes action to change these practices.
    • Contributes to the development and revision of standards as needs are defined.
    • Identifies and utilizes information from monitors and research to effect changes in practice.
    • Facilitates change in a positive manner.
    • Contributes and participates in the evaluation of new systems.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
