Job Summary

Supervise the operation of the Sterile Processing Department and ensure sterilization processes meet all Federal, State, and local regulatory/advisory agency requirements. Uses root cause analysis to problem solve and identify process issues following up to assure problem resolution has occurred. Develop, implement and facilitate procedures to ensure the availability of supplies and equipment for the Operating Room inventory and the case cart system. Acts as resource for affiliate and satellite facilities in instrument selection, processing, and helps to standardize sterilization processes at office locations. Promotes staff education, certification, and the development of safe sterilization practices under the guides of the national certifying agencies.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education: Associate's Degree
Minimum Years of Experience: 3 Years of experience in aseptic techniques and sterilization processes;

2 Years of progressive leadership experience with managing staff and department operations.
Substitutable Education & Experience (Optional): None.
Required Certifications/Licensure: Sterile Processing certification (or must be able to obtain Sterile Processing certification within the first 12 months upon accepting the job role)
Required Training: Demonstrated knowledge of infection control practices, Operating Room procedures, and materials/supply handling;

Thorough knowledge of supplies, instruments and equipment used in Operating Room, Labor and Delivery, Emergency Room, Critical Care and specialty units;

Experience with automated case cart processes and electronic instrument systems;

Computer skills which include, but are not limited to, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint). 
 

Essential Functions

  • Coordinates, establishes and defines the standards of personnel engaged in all phases of sterile processing.
  • Ensures institutional sterilization processes meet regulatory agency requirements.
  • Prepares and supervises operational and capital budget for the Sterile Processing department and reports monthly on significant budget deviations.
  • Makes recommendations for streamlining processes and eliminating non-value added tasks in the department.
  • Oversees the overall functionality of the Sterile Processing department and Operating Room supply chain.
  • Develops, implements and facilitates procedures to ensure supply and equipment availability for the Operating Room.
  • Supervises and coordinates the case cart processes and procedures.
  • Prepares reports regarding department activities related to the processing and distribution of sterile supplies. Ability to interact appropriately with senior management and outside vendors.
  • Attends and participates in Risk Management, Product Evaluation, OR Operations meetings and other committee meetings as required in regard to matters involving Sterile Processing and Operating Room supply chain.
  • Coordinates the continuing education of the Sterile Processing staff to ensure that all required training is received.
  • Functions as a system administrator for  instrument tracking system.  Knowledgeable in the use of software for supply ordering.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Acts as a liaison and advisor to departments/office practices on matters related to sterile processing and instrument selection and storage.
  • Periodically tours departments/office practices to ensure thorough understanding of their needs and expectations as requested.
  • Attends conventions, seminars and other meetings to further professional knowledge and skills. Maintains membership in job related professional organizations.
  • Provides resources for staff who seek certification. Takes responsibility for determining learning needs and seeks opportunities for self and staff.
  • Ensures equipment is properly maintained, tested and calibrated.
  • Develops and maintains departmental productivity and quality indicators.
  • Demonstrates good organizational skills, prioritizing work and system requirements.
  • Communicates tactfully, clearly and concisely both orally and in writing with all customers.
  • Develops and maintains good communication between Sterile Processing, Operating Room and other departmental customers.
  • Stays abreast of recommended standards and best practices, anticipating and making recommendations for process change.
  • Acts as a liaison to the Infection Control Committee and Disaster Preparedness Committee representing Perioperative Services.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
