Job Summary

Sterile Processing Technicians have responsibility in infection control by maintaining cleanliness, functionality, and inventory of healthcare instrumentation and equipment. The apprenticeship will combine on the job learning and education from an approved program to allow apprentices the opportunity to meet necessary requirements to obtain certification in Sterile Processing.

Minimum Years of Experience: None

Required Certifications/Licensure: None
Required Training: Basic computer skills and aptitude;

A willingness to learn, understand, and properly use decontamination and sterile processing equipment;

A willingness to learn and understand how to maintain surgical instrumentation (How they function, are processed, and how to clean and sterilize them)

Essential Functions

  • Apprenticeship will provide opportunity to receive hands-on training in tasks related to Sterile Processing, including learning best practice on how to properly sterilize instruments and equipment through series of critical steps, including introduction into electronic instrument tracking systems.
  • Receive training and gain foundational knowledge on all related hospital equipment necessary to complete assignments as Sterile Processing Apprentice.
  • Gain understanding in infection control procedures, the importance of infection control and how it pertains to sterile processing and decontamination procedures.
  • Apprenticeship will include responsibility of obtaining education from approved educational program. Apprentice must attempt certification test through IAHCSMM or CBSPD within six (6) months of completion of apprenticeship. If apprentice does not pass first attempt, must attempt a second time within one (1) year of completion of apprenticeship.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Under direct supervision, contributes in tasks related to cleaning, decontamination, and sterilization processes.
  • Apprentice will learn best practices in assembling instruments related to sterilization and decontamination.
  • Apprentice will gain foundational knowledge in Operating Room inventory, and assist in assigned takes related to Operating Room inventory.
  • Receive guidance and feedback directly from assigned Sterile Processing and Operating Room management and staff.
  • Maintains an optimistic and professional image and exhibits excellent customer relations to patients, visitors, physicians, and coworkers. Shows courtesy, compassion, and respect.  Conforms to Service Excellence Policy and "House Rules."
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
