Job Summary

Assigns appropriate ICD  and CPT codes to diagnoses and/or procedures for reimbursement and statistical purposes. Follows the American Medical Association and American Hospital Association coding guidelines. Abstracts clinical information from medical records for complete and accurate statistical documentation.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent
Minimum Years of Experience: 3 Years of Experience
Substitutable Education & Experience: Experience can be substituted with an Associate's Degree
Required Certifications/Licensure: RHIA/RHIT//CCS/CCS-P//CPC/CPC-H/COC//CIC required. CCA may be considered if paired with Associate's degree or higher. (RHIT or RHIA Credentialed Health Information Management students deemed graduation eligible will meet degree requirement.)
Required Training: Proficient in the following areas: ED, OPS, and IP;
Completion of college level courses in Anatomy, Physiology, and Medical Terminology;
Extensive knowledge and competency of personal computer applications (word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications).

Essential Functions

  • Reviews and interprets inpatient and outpatient medical documentation to accurately assign ICD  and CPT codes for reimbursement and statistical purposes.
  • Abstracts information into computer for reimbursement and statistical purposes.
  • Must work independently and collaboratively to support the achievement of department People, Quality, Finance, and Service goals as well as organizational goals. 
  • Works as a team with physicians, coding staff and other hospital personnel to ensure proper and accurate code assignment and continuous quality improvement.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • May assist the Coding Manager in training employees and auditing the work of  employees.
  • Other duties may include:
    • Review of Daily Medical Necessity Report
    • Assisting Coding Manager with supervision of Clinical Affiliations
    • All Other Duties as Assigned
