Job Summary

Under the direct management of Leadership, the Director of Patient Accounts plans, leads and directs the work of staff and functions critical to successful revenue cycle operations for the entire organization. These positions rely on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish defined goals, and oversee complicated revenue cycle processes. They perform within the constraints of large numbers of differing rules and regulations, most of which are governmental, to perform a large variety and quantity of tasks accurately, concisely, timely, efficiently, and within strict compliance standards. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected in this role as is familiarity with an ever changing variety of revenue cycle concepts, practices, and procedures. The areas/positions which report up through the Patient Account Directors include insurance billing, insurance follow-up  claims (including edits), and vendor management at a minimum.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education: Bachelor of Science or Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration
Minimum Years of Experience: 5 Years of Experience with Evidence of Progressively Increasing Responsibility in a Hospital Setting Involving Successful Receivable and/or Cash Management (At Least 3 Years Must Be in a Supervisory or Management Capacity)
Substitutable Education & Experience (Optional): None.
Required Certifications/Licensure: None.
Required Training: Experience and performance that reflects a results-oriented approach to the management of patient accounting;

Demonstrated ability to supervise, motivate, communicate with, and lead personnel in an organizational setting;

Thorough understanding of healthcare technology and computerized patient accounting systems.
 

Essential Functions

  • Leads by example.
  • Develops and maintains processes and technology systems to provide optimum cash flow from patient care operations.
  • Fosters cooperation, open communication, and collaborative decision making.
  • Provides proper control systems to assure the integrity of all patient accounts and of all entries to the hospital’s systems.
  • Assures compliance with all state and federal laws, rules and regulations.
  • Acts as liaison with third party vendors. Sets performance goals with agencies and creates a comprehensive plan to monitor monthly performance and communicates this in meetings.
  • Makes policy recommendations as appropriate.
  • Coordinates all PFS activities to meet LMC Service Expectations.
  • Monitors staff productivity and assures that tasks are performed accurately, efficiently and effectively.
  • Coordinates departmental interactions with other departments.
  • Assures proper and appropriate communication and coordination among other departments and other hospitals or health care providers.
  • Coordinates efforts to maintain proper staffing levels and training. Provides detailed justification and data to support required for additional “full time equivalent” requests.
  • Coordinates with departmental managers and supervisors to prepare and manage operations, capital, and FTE budgets. Prepares monthly/quarterly variance reports based on performance.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Establishes operational policies and procedures and updates them as needed.
  • Maintains good relations with physicians and their staff.
  • Provides research support for upper management and/or Administration as required.
  • Establishes annual goals for all assigned departments and monitors performance.
  • Responsible for root cause analysis, process improvement, and follow through.
  • Establishes and maintains Key Performance Indicator reporting including benchmarks.
  • The ability to handle extremely stressful situation is critical in the daily functioning of this role.
  • Serves on committees as assigned.
  • Manages performance by overseeing work, providing feedback, coaching, and holding employees accountable for unsatisfactory behavior, utilizing sound human resources principles.
  • Develops, implements, and monitors work plans with measurable outcomes paying attention to key indicators and making adjustment as needed to capitalize on changing circumstances.
  • Adapts to various audiences and professionally delivers information in an accurate, concise, timely, and respectful manner.
  • Refines and improves Revenue Cycle operations through redesign, retraining, and innovation.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
