Job Summary

Provides genetic education, counseling, generation pedigree construction, risk assessment, genetic testing, and support to patients with personal and/or family history of cancer. Obtains necessary information to provide counseling on appropriate tests and interpretation of test results. Acts as a liaison between providers, geneticists, laboratories, and clinical staff regarding genetic testing and follow-up care. Documents patient encounters and all pertinent information clearly and concisely in the patient record in compliance with applicable standards.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education: Master’s Degree in Genetic Counseling
Minimum Years of Experience: None.
Substitutable Education & Experience: None.
Required Certifications/Licensure: Certified Genetic Counselor (CGC) credential through the American Board of Genetic Counseling at time of hire or must obtain within 12 months of hire into role.
Required Training: None.

Essential Functions

  • Facilitate and education patients on appropriate genetic testing options.
  • Assess risk for cancer based on personal and family history.
  • Discuss how results can be used for medical management according to national guidelines.
  • Serve as a resource to providers regarding genetic testing options, guidelines, and care plan implications.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Runs risk assessment models, when necessary, appropriate, and available, to aid in decision making.
  • Reviews pathology reports to identify patients appropriate for genetic counseling and coordinates with associated physician.
  • Completes documentation of personal history, family history, initial impression, genetic testing, recommendations, test results, results interpretation, cancer risk estimates, and summary management recommendations for each patient in the patient’s medical record.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
