Job Summary
Assists the Director of Nursing in the day-to-day leadership for the operations of patient care areas, which includes the planning, organizing, and coordinating of patient care delivery to meet established standards as well as developing and managing personnel and fiscal resources. Promotes a practice environment that empowers others to provide effective, compassionate and efficient patient care. Works with Director of Nursing and other nursing and non-nursing leaders to ensure quality services are provided to LMC patients and family members.
Identifies best practices and works with team to implement measures to continually improve patient care. Works with leaders and staff through formal and informal processes to assure compliance with regulatory standards and research based practice guidelines. Able to problem solve / critically think through complex issues to determine best approach to resolve the situation.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Education: Bachelors of Science in Nursing and a Masters in a healthcare related field.
Minimum Years of Experience: 5 Years of experience in acute care, which includes a minimum of 2 years of experience in a nursing leadership/management position.
Substitutable Education & Experience (Optional): Consideration will be given to candidate enrolled in Master’s program with the understanding that degree must be completed with 12 months of entering role.
Required Certification/Licensure: Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in South Carolina; National nursing certification in specialty or must be acquired within 6 months of hire into the role.
Required Training: None.
Essential Functions
- Assists Director of Nursing with oversight of patient care in areas of responsibility.
- Assists Director of Nurisng in identifying trends and changes in health care delivery and clinical practice and collaborates with staff to implement improvements.
- Assists personnel to accept responsibility with respect to attainment of goals and utilization of resources.
- Assists Director of Nursing in developing and implementing systems to measure patient care outcomes, utilization of standards of practice and hospital policy and procedures.
- Ensures that each department has an implemented quality monitoring plan that measures patient outcomes and practice standards and that improvement actions plans are designed and implemented when adherence to standards meets thresholds for evaluation.
- Ensures that members of the staff serve on appropriate hospital committees and PI task forces to identify opportunities for improvement and evaluate and create system enhancements to obtain desired outcomes.
- Investigates patient, family, visitor, and physician complaints concerning services provided, initiates an action plan to resolve the concern and communicates activities with VP.
- Develops, reviews and revises nursing and interdisciplinary policies and procedures to reflect current standards of practice and care. Considers professional organization standards and related statutes and regulations when developing and or revising P&P and standards.
- Knowledgeable regarding professional practice standards (ANA, DHEC, DNV, CMS, etc.) and shares knowledge with others.
- Maintains professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in areas of responsibility.
- Assists Director of Nurisng in ensuring the establishment of departmental goals and objectives and ensures effective utilization of policies and procedures for departmental operations.
- Assists Director of Nursing with the establishing and/or revising job descriptions and associated evaluation tools as needed.
- Assists Director of Nursing with the development of staffing plans for assigned areas.
- Participates in interviewing, hiring, orienting, validating competency of personnel, as well as providing leadership for conducting disciplinary action.
- Evaluates, selects, utilizes and accounts for material resources with appropriate consideration for patient/staff needs, hospital policies and procedures and budgetary constraints.
- Assists Director of Nursing in development of operating and capital budget for assigned areas.
- Assists managers in adhering to approved operating and capital budgets.
- Assists Director of Nursing in preparing accurate departmental reports.
- Identifies opportunities to improve patient care, health care practices, operational systems and processes, and interaction and communication between health care partners. Acts as a resource and role model in initiating the PI process and participates in development of action plans to achieve desired outcomes.
- Assists Director of Nursing in providing leadership for quality improvement working collegially with other healthcare team members to ensure quality care delivered to our patients.
- Actively participates in performance improvement committees as assigned.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Role models, teaches and mentors others in the use of the PI process, techniques and tools.
- Participates in prioritization of PI projects.
- Assists Director of Nurising in providing leadership related to patient satisfaction initiatives in assigned areas.
- Reviews and analyzes trends in quality monitoring to ensure that the PI process is applied to achieve desired outcomes. With the Director revises plans as needed to improve outcomes and/or achieve goals.
- Represents nursing on various committees within the organization and community.
- Keeps the Director of Nurisng abreast of current activities, plans and developments in areas of responsibility.
- Participates in the development of nursing strategic and PI plans.
- Performs all other duties as assigned
