Job Summary

The Assistant Vice President of Risk Management and Claims provides leadership to ensure the optimal design and alignment of all insurance and risk management functions in support of LMC’s mission. Serves as a key leader and strategic advisor on Insurance/Captive and risk management across the enterprise. Leads the development and implementation of an insurance and risk management vision that delivers strategic thought and actions to healthcare operations, clinical, HR, legal, IT and finance leadership.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education: Master's Degree in Related Field or Juris Doctorate (J.D.)
Minimum Years of Experience: Ten (10) Years of Progressive Experience in Risk Management, and/or Claims (ideally including medical professional liability and/or general liability), and/or related legal field;

Seven (7) Years of Leadership Experience in prior areas of related experience in legal/insurance claims management with four years of leadership in these areas.
Substitutable Education & Experience (Optional): In lieu of above experience combination, those with a Juris Doctorate (J.D.) that are licensed in South Carolina (SC) with both seven (7) Years of Progressive Experience in Claims defense litigation(including medical professional liability) and/or insurance defense, as well as 5 Years of Leadership Experience in related experience areas will also be eligible
Required Certifications/Licensure: None.
Required Training: Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with all levels of the organization;

Experienced managing a captive insurance company;

Has expertise and experience is the areas of Clinical Risk, Legal Health Care experience, and Claims and Litigation Management.

Essential Functions

  • Stays abreast of current issues in loss prevention, safety, and security.
  • Identifies incident/event trends with direction/guidance in implementing improvement actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Assist in obtaining various lines of insurance coverage in order to obtain the broadest coverage for the most cost effective price. Assists in overseeing reporting processes to insurance carriers.
  • Assists in risk management due diligence on potential acquisitions.
  • Identifies new opportunities for departmental impacts geared towards lowering the total cost of risk.
  • Performs captive insurance company business functions.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in insurance, risk management, and claims management.
  • Exceptional relationship, team, and people development skills. Able to effectively manage and develop teams.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Strong financial acumen, as well as understanding the financial impact of decisions and their impact on the organization.
  • Ability to facilitate resolution of conflicts, proficiently handling highly charged problems and situations in both a calm and objective manner.
  • Develops strategy for the claims program to include oversight of defense preparation activities.
  • Assures that continuous readiness systems and structures are in place to provide for critical event response and investigation in coordination with key stakeholders.
  • Collaborates with the clinical functions to facilitate ongoing development of patient safety strategic plans with a focus on development of a safety culture including transparency and organizational learning.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned, including legal tasks and duties as assigned by General Counsel.
  • *Candidates who have their J.D. and are licensed in the state of South Carolina may perform the additional duties of the Associate General Counsel. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:
    • Serving as a legal resource for Hospital and its subsidiaries as requested by the leadership and as directed and approved by SVP General Counsel.
    • Providing back-up legal services for legal needs across Hospital’s sites and clinics. 
    • Coordinating and overseeing outside legal resources for Hospital and its subsidiaries as approved by the General Counsel.
    • Supporting physician contracting and documentation across all Hospital sites.
    • Serving as the primary legal resource for one or more key practice areas, (e.g. employment law) across all Hospital sites.
    • Engaging and coordinating the engagement of outside legal resources relative to key practice area(s) assigned by the General Counsel.
