Job Summary

The Nurse Manager is responsible for ensuring a safe, efficient, cost-effective, and high-quality patient care environment.  The Manager is responsible for the clinical operations on assigned unit. Assist with orientation and training for all clinical staff.  Administrative and operational responsibilities include all aspects of Regulatory requirements for DHEC, maximizing patient flow, and optimizing the work environment to facilitate open communications and professional excellence.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education: Associates Degree in Nursing
Minimum Years of Experience: 3 Years of directly related experience with a minimum of 1 year in a supervisory   capacity
Required Certifications/Licensure: Current SC License as an RN
Required Training:  Familiar with LTC regulations

Essential Functions

  • Direct the overall functions of the nursing activities on all shifts of assigned units in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern the long-term care facility and per LMCEC Policies & Procedures.
  • Ensure that the Nursing Services Procedures Manual is followed by nursing services personnel.
  • Ensure administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, employee evaluations, physical/body audit lists, nosocomial reports, CMS 802 Reports, etc. are completed within their required time frame.
  • Complete Weekly and Monthly QI Reports as assigned by D.O.N. and A.D.O.Ns.  
  • Participate in the development, maintenance and implementation of the facility's quality improvement program.  Make quality care a priority.
  • Participate in surveys (inspections) made by authorized government agencies.
  • Periodically review the department's policies, procedure manuals, job descriptions, etc.  Make recommendations for revisions.
  • Review and/or complete Events, Observations and Riskonnect Reports as necessary and follow up as needed (i.e., evaluate the need for protective devices).
  • Perform periodic audits of residents' charts (i.e. Comprehensive Monthly Summaries, Progress Notes, body audits, PD Assessments and devices, and Care Plans).  Monitor quality indicators and routinely observe medication passes and treatments.  Ensure charting, body audit and physical schedules are current.
  • Ensure all discontinued medications are removed from the med cart immediately and returned to the Pharmacy in a timely manner.
  • Participate in the interview process of prospective employees as requested.
  • Ensure all physicians' orders are implemented appropriately. 
  • Ensure all lab results are addressed in a timely manner.

Duties and Responsibilites

  • Oversee work assignments on nursing units.
  • Monitor staff attendance and review staff time sheets weekly to ensure staff is utilizing time clock appropriately.  Inform the Nursing Supervisor or A.D.O.N. of staffing needs when assigned personnel fail to report to work.
  • Delegate to each Staff Nurse the administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability necessary to perform assigned duties.
  • Make frequent rounds of the Nursing Unit each day to ensure that all staff is performing work assignments in accordance with acceptable nursing standards.  Reports findings to the A.D.O.N. as necessary.
  • Ensure disciplinary action is administered fairly and without regard to race, sex, religion, national origin, age, disability, or similar distinctions.
  • Develop and maintain a good working rapport with inter-department personnel, as well as other departments within the facility to assure that nursing services and activities can be adequately maintained to meet the needs of the residents.
  • Meet routinely with staff as needed to assist in identifying and correcting problem areas, and/or improving services.  Make good communication a priority.
  • Work in a cooperative manner that fosters favorable relations between employees and residents, resident’s families, visitors and fellow employees.
  • Works with Staff Nurses to ensure smooth operation of nursing units.
  • Works with the Pharmacy Consultant to facilitate consistent pharmacological services.  Follow up on any monthly Pharmacy recommendations.
  • Works with the Medical Director, attending physicians, psychiatrists and other specialists to provide consistent medical and psychiatric care.
  • Provide direct nursing care as necessary.
  • Advise A.D.O.Ns of problem areas and develop and implement corrective action.
  • Keep the D.O.N. informed of the status of residents and other related matters through written/oral reports (i.e., quality indicators).
  • Ensure that procedures for the administration, storage, and control of medications and supplies are being followed by all staff on assigned units.
  • Meet with residents and/or family members.  Resolve issues in a timely manner.  Contact the A.D.O.Ns, D.O.N. or Administrator for support as required.
  • Make independent decisions concerning nursing care in accordance with our policies and procedures.
  • Evaluate admissions, transfers, and discharges to ensure appropriate completion.
  • Monitor seriously ill residents as necessary.
  • Ensure that families are notified of significant changes of the resident, including transfer to the hospital or death.
  • Develop and maintain good communications with the residents, their families, support departments, etc., to adequately plan for the residents' needs.
